Week 3 Posting - Cables

Cat versions are used to tell what a cable can push carry. From CAT 3 to now CAT 7 each cable variation increases either the distance or speed. From CAT 5e and onward there has been a version of cable that has also had shielded cables, this is used when running close to electrical wires or in super warm or cold climates such as near a heater and AC. To terminate these cables, they are about the same with the difference being the gel or aluminum. When using these cables it is crucial to not make to tight of a turn. In my experience it is best to have other people do this because it does get messy. Additional rj45 ends should be used as well. What is Cat7 - and why you don’t need it. (cablematters.com)

Week 2 Posting - Topologies

Network topologies are different way that Wi-Fi and networks connect, one thing that I could never understand is how wireless mesh can be counted as a mesh network. Devices such as Google Wi-Fi relate to a single port to the WAN or modem, however they are being sold as mesh, the goal of mesh is to maintain stability by providing multiple exits to a network if one were to go down. The mesh that Google sells is false advertising in my eyes because if the main hub gets disconnected that the whole network will not be able to reach outside the network. In the real world if each AP had a direct line to a switch or multiple switches and connected to two routers that would be a proper “mesh” network. A hub and spoke with AP on the end connected is a mesh and anything less should not be labeled as such.

Week 1 Posting - First Day

This is one of my first classes at Bellevue Uni, I am excited to learn and work especially with one of my favorite parts of IT, servers. The first server that I ever setup was a Minecraft server for me and my brother to play on. From allocating ram to setting a static IP I configured the server to stay connected and stay online. My more recent position as a cyber operator for the DoD has given me access to powerful programs such as Hyper-V and virtual switches. I hope to continue to learn and grow my skillset to be better for my employers and for my wallet.  A few years ago, I was training for my MCSE but the test was discontinued before I had the chance to take it, with this course I will work to achieve my network abilities and grow an induvial.
